The Carinus Art Centre has always tried to play a role in serving the wider community. We have been involved in the following programs:
The Raphael Centre is situated close to the art school and works with sufferers of HIV. Ms Van Der Merwe and thereafter Ms Jeanine Grobler and Ms Vuyokazi Yumata have been actively involved in providing art workshops and organising fundraising exhibitions for the centre.
In 2014 in collaboration with the Creative City Project of the 1820 Settlers Monument the Carinus Art Centre started teaching the subject Visual Arts to the Gr 10s – 12s of Ntsika Secondary. The Creative City financial support continued for 2 years and thereafter until the end of 2019 the Carinus Art Centre managed with the help of fundraising to fund the project. We included the Gr 11 and 12 Visual Arts learners from Nombulelo High into our teaching load from 2019 and have also been teaching Creative Arts to Fikizolo Primary Gr 5 – 7 since 2018. The Eastern Cape Education Department has recently acknowledged these non-fee paying learners as enrolled with us and we have received funding from them for art materials and some of our running costs.
Carinus received funding from the National Arts Council (NAC) at the end of 2019 to offer workshops to empower local unemployed artists to become art workshop facilitators, as well as to offer art to underprivileged schools where art is not offered as a subject. A very successful course was offered at Mary Waters High School to learners from Gr 8 – 12 and more workshops were offered to the Raphael youth. Unfortunately these classes had to end at the end of Term 1 2020 due to Covid constraints. We hope to continue with a voluntary afternoon art course there next year.
Various Carinus staff have taken part in the past year in courses offered at the Centre: a basic Textiles printing skills course, as well as a course in basic Printmaking techniques and in Etching techniques.
From time to time we offer courses for Adults in the afternoon or early evening:
From 2018 – 2020 a number of Textile screen printing courses were offered and in 2021 we have offered 4 Ceramics hand building courses. These get advertised on various Whatsapp groups and on Facebook
